H1N1 is a new influenza virus causing illness in people. The influenza A (H1N1) virus is a new virus subtype that is spreading from human to human. The virus has genes from pig- avian and human influenza A- virus with a combination never seen before.
The symptoms of this new influenza A H1N1 virus in people are similar to the symptoms of regular human flu and include fever, cough, sore throat, body aches, headache, chills and fatigue. The Chief Epidemiologist and the Civil Protection Department of the National
Commissioner of the Icelandic Police are responsible for the organisation of
education, training and dissemination of information about the new influenza and are clarifying the situation to the public. Flu viruses are thought to spread mainly from person to person through coughing or sneezing of people with influenza.
